Warsaw, officially the Capital City of Warsaw, is the capital and largest city of Poland. The metropolis stands on the River Vistula in east-central Poland. Its population is officially estimated at 1.86 million residents within a greater metropolitan area of 3.1 million residents, which makes Warsaw the 6th most populous city in the European Union. The city area measures 517 km2 (200 sq mi) and comprises 18 districts, while the metropolitan area covers 6,100 km2 (2,355 sq mi).[7] Warsaw is an alpha global city a major cultural, political economic hub, and the country's seat of government. It is also the capital of the Masovian Voivodeship.
Warsaw was founded in 1280 by the dukes of Mazovia. They built a castle so that they could control passage on the Vistula River, this marked the beginning of the development of Warsaw, which became the capital of the Duchy of Mazovia in 1344. After the Second World War, 85 percent of Warsaw was destroyed by the Nazi troops, and the uprising of August 1944, the restoration of the city was purposely undertaken. By 1966 all of the monuments of the old city were re-elected according to their outward form between the 14th and 18th centuries.
